Intro: Representation essay

Within the Asda 2012 Christmas advertisement stereotypical representations of women mainly housewives are represented as the ideal housewife as she does all of the domestic activities like cleaning, cooking and caring for children and being happy at the end of the advertisement this conveys the stereotypical  ideology as fact which shows woman as nothing more than housewives and being happy with just being a housewife, however the husband in the advertisement is shown as useless and uninterested in all house keeping tasks which plays off the male stereotype of them being slobs and bad at being househusbands which could offend real househusbands as they are belittled in this advertisement. It's obvious that this advert was targeted towards women mainly housewives as they are given the main focus as the narrator says   "and behind mum there is Asda" this reinforces the thought of the advertisement being targeted towards housewives. An important scene in the advertisement which conveys the sexist tones which are scattered throughout the entire advert as when the mother sits down on a bean bag at the dinner table she is lower than the father  which conveys a heirachy being formed as the father is at the head of the table connoting to having the most power out of anyone while the mother is next to him and is lower than anyone else showing that she is the weakest out of anyone at the table.

Robin Thicke

In the Robin Thicke music video women are objectified and are shown as sex objects because of their wearing next to nothing amount of clothing while dancing also the men in the video are fully clothed in suits which created a heirachy and shows the women as sexually available to the men as the women are seen as more vulnerable as they are positioned is sexualised positions in the video in the stereotypical message of women having no power and being objectified. Also lyrics within the video like "I know you want it" paired with Robin Thicke uncomfortably close to the women this connotes to the dehumanisation of women and portraying women as objects to give the video sex appeal as the video seems to be targeted towards teenagers to young adults and with a mixed appeal to both genders with its sound and video and with this appeal to young impressionable audience young men and women would be exposed to action which if recreated would be inappropriate. The men in the video dominate the women as they surround the women and look at the women just for sexual gratification. The black woman in the video portrays a positive message of any race is beautiful  for other races as usually white women would only be in music videos, however there is only one black woman and two white woman which still has white as dominant and stereotypically showing white women as higher than any other race.

WKD: the lads

This advertisement portrays young men as unkempt slobs who fail to be domestically able men which is stereotypically shown in all forms of media as men are shown to do nothing but make a mess of any domestic are, but when one of the males bring home a woman all of the men are dressed in nothing but an apron and act in a stereotypically feminine way ridiculing maids which are mainly women and convey the stereotype of women being sex objects as they are naked only wearing a small apron and is showing women to be  and being the only gender who is able to do domestic actions as they have to act in this feminine way to clean. This reinforces the stereotype of men and women as the men are portrayed to be no help in actions like cleaning and women being shown as sexualised objects within the media and society and men being shown to be
